Georges Rohner

From 1913 to 1950

1913

Georges Rohner was born in Paris 16e, on 20th july.

1929

He discovered the museums of the Louvre and the Luxembourg Palace, and became a student at the Beaux Arts School.

1930

He became a student in Lucien Simon’s studio along with Humblot, Jannot, Lasne, Pellan, Brayer, Civet, Fontanarosa, Fillacier, Albert Rémy, Chauffrey etc.

1931

Journey to Amsterdam

1934

Work on show at the salons des Indépendants and the Tuileries. Spent the next two years in the Island of Guadeloupe where he did his military service.

1935

He completed paintings on the walls of the Basse-Terre Town Hall in Guadeloupe. First group “Forces Nouvelles” exhibition at the Billet-Worms Gallery in Paris.

1936

First New Generation Salon, Galerie Carpentier. Second group “Forces Nouvelles”, Galerie Billet-Worms. First individual exhibition at the the Billet-Worms gallery.

1937

Young Artists’ salon at the Galerie de Berri, prefaced by R. Cognat.

1938

Journey to La Haye.

1939

Third group “Forces Nouvelles”, galerie de Berri.

1940

Called up into the army, Rohner was imprisoned at Trèves (Stalag XII). He decorated the Stalag chapel, of which he preserved the “Prisoners’ Christ” (1941)

1943

Married Suzanne Guy. Exhibited in the Salon des Tuileries on the theme of Music. Birth of his first son Michel. Creation of a tapestry design “Autumn” and a woven test piece at the Manufacture Pinton, Felletin Aubusson

1946

Exhibition at the Galerie Charpentier on the theme: “Silent Life” Individual exhibition at the Galerie Barreiro.

1947

Journey to Holland with Robert Humblot. Individual exhibition at the Galerie Barreiro (17 pictures of Holland)

1948

Showed work in the Biennale de Venise

1949

Salon des Indépendants. Individual exhibition , gallery Georges de Braux in Philadelphia

1950

From 1951 to 1980

1951

One-man exhibition at the Galérie Framond (portraits, natures mortes, landscapes). 2 test pièces woven at the Manufacture des Gobelins

1952

Tapestry design « To the Glory of the Armies of Paris » Woven for the Hôtel des Invalides in Paris by the Manufacture Pinton, Felletin. Individual exhibition at the Galerie Motte, Geneva. Birth of his second son, François.

1953

Individual exhibition at the Galerie Framond (natures mortes). Tapestry design « The Earth » woven at the Manufacture Pinton, Felletin-Aubusson for the Chambre Syndicale of the French steel industry in Paris. Creation of a tapestry design « Concerto ».

1954

Tapestry design « Polytechnique » woven for the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris, by the Manufacture Pinton, Felletin-Aubusson.

1955

Tapestry design « Fondation de la société des Gens de Lettres » Woven for the Hôtel de Massa (Paris) at the Manufacture Pinton, Felletin-Aubusson. Two more tapestries « the Lot river » and « the Dordogne river » woven for the Préfecture du Lot in Cahors, by the Manufacture Pinton, Felletin-Aubusson.

1956

An outdoor mural painting « The Elements » for the Technical College of Passy Saint-Gervais (Haute-Savoie). Salon d’Automne. Journey to Tuscany . Individual exhibition at the Galerie Framond (compositions).

1958

Salon des Tuileries « A homage to Ingres ». A mural for the Lycée Hélène Boucher in Paris (architects : Dondel, Dhuit). Cachan Technical Centre : mural entitled « Youth »..

1959

Exhibition « Wrought Iron and Tapestry ». Rohner, Subes and Despierre at the Musée Galliéra. Nominated to teach at the Beaux Arts school. Decorated with the Légion d’Honneur.

1961

Exhibited at the Galerie Aktuaryus in Strasbourg, and the Galerie Saluden in Brest. A mural painted for the C.E.T. in Brest (architects Dondel, Dhuit).

1962

Appointed teacher of drawing and colour at the School of Decorative Arts. An outdoor mosaic « Iron » for the Technical College in Bourges.

1963

Individual exhibition at the Galerie Weil. May Salon « The Raft of the Médusa ». Lycée de Chalons-sur-Marne : mural entitled « Marine ». Salon des Tuileries : « A grey draperie ». Received a décoration : ordre des Arts et Lettres.

1964

Salon Comparisons : « The Drowned Man ». An outdoor mosaic for th gymnasium of the Lycée Paul Valéry

1965

Individual exhibition at the Galerie de Paris (70 pictures). Visited Rome. An outdoor mosaic « Architecture » for the Cité Technique of Annonay

1966

Exhibition, Galerie Anne de Francony in Nice. Exhibition in Bayonville. Second trip to Rome. Lycée in Annecy : « Marines » mural paintings. Exhibited in the Salon de Mai « Les Boules » . Publication of « Carnet de Rome »(published by Bibliothèque

1967

Exhibition : Galérie de Paris “Rome by Rohner”

1968

George Rohner featured, along with reproductions of his works, in a book by François Doult « French Watercolours of the 20th Century » Elected a member of the Académie des Beaux Arts, he occupied the former seat of Ingres.

1969

He took part in the Salon d’Automne. Travelled in Spain. One-man exhibition at the Galerie de Paris oils and watercolours).

1970

Took part in the Salon d’Automne. Travelled to Greece. His works for Architecture in Schools were presented in an exhibition « Art and Architecture » in the Halles de Paris.

1972

Exhibition at the Galery de Paris. Exhibited at the Manoir du Mad (Meurthe et Moselle).

1973

Preview in Paris of the exhibition later presented in London and New York. One-man exhibition, Wildenstein Gallery in London.

1974

One-man exhibition at the Wildenstein Gallery in New York. One-man exhibition, Galerie de Paris

1976

Exhibition at the Orangerie Gallery in Nantes.

1977

One man exhibition at the Galerie de Paris.

1979

Took part in the exhibition « Art in the Thirties in France » at the Musée d’Art et d’Industrie in St. Etienne. Individual exhibition of oils, drawings, watercolours at the Galerie de Paris.

1980

Retrospective exhibition of the « Forces Nouvelles » group at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. Participation in « Les Réalismes 1919-1939 » at the Centre Georges Pompidou. Rohner was the guest of honour at the Salon d’Art of Mantes-la-Jolie

From 1981 to 2000

1981

A ten minute film on the pictures of Georges Rohner by Philippe Lopez-Curval. Rohner was the guest of honour at the Salon d’Art du Raincy.

1982

A Homage to Georges Rohner » at Saint Germain l’Auxerrois. Exhibition in Madrid with the Galerie de l’Orangerie. The Modern Art muséum, Pompidou Centre, acquired two drawings.

1983

One-man exhibition at the Galerie Framond.

1984

40 paintings 1933-1984 exhibited at the Galerie Framond. Exhibition « Georges Rohner, painter and illustrator of the legend of Napoleon

1986

ndividual exhibition at the Galerie Framond.

1987

Retrospective at the Fine arts Museum in Quimper

1988

An important painting entitled « Rue Bonaparte » acquired by the state for the Musée Gaston-Rapin in Villeneuve-sur-Lot.

1989

Took part in the Fine Arts Academy’s exhibition in Moscow

1990

Group exhibition at the Galerie Guériden in Metz. One-man exhibition, Galerie Framond.

1991

One-man exhibition, Galerie Framond (nude and draperies).

1993

Work shown at the Galerie Framond. Personal exhibition in the city of Issoire.

1994
